Consultations at VetCare Tauranga
For most people, their pet is part of the family and as such you want them to have good health and the best possible care. We ensure personal attention for your pet, unique to your pet’s medical history and your current concerns. We also believe in guiding you on the best methods for caring for your pet to keep him or her healthy and happy. It is important that you have a regular check-up scheduled for your pet twice a year and not only visit when your pet is unwell. This helps us catch problems in the early stages which can lead to a much better outcome.
A wellness check will include a detailed history of your pet’s appetite and thirst, general behaviour, eliminations as well as what preventatives you use. You will also be asked about any medications of supplements being used at the time. This will help us learn more about how your pet usually behaves and also alert us if the normal behaviour changes. A lot of the time a health issue can be picked up from symptoms which start with behavioural changes. We move on from the history to a general examination. This will include checking the ears, eyes, mouth, heart and lungs, abdomen, coat, skin and limbs. Even if your pet is in perfect health, this will help us give recommendations on preventatives, diets, supplements, vaccinations and so forth. If anything is picked up during the examination, further diagnostic tests may be required.
Preventative Care
The annual to bi-annual examinations of your pet will help your vet determine possible preventative or palliative care. As pets age they are more likely to suffer from a variety of diseases and pick up illness much faster that when they were young. If the screenings are done regularly we should be able to pick up a number of issues before they become a problem and can advise on care to prevent or stay the onset of certain illnesses. These early detection screens may include urine tests, blood tests, stool testing and other diagnostic tests. Parasite prevention, vaccinations and nutrition assessments form part of the wellness check-ups as well. Vaccines are tailored to the pet and the possible risk of exposure to avoid over-vaccination.
Caring for pets with an illness
We aim to assist with a high level of care when your pet is brought in with an undiagnosed health concern. We look at diagnosis and testing as well as offering a range of options when it comes to care related to various medical conditions. Conditions requiring long term care and monitoring will require a number of vet visits to ensure continuous care and changes to treatment if necessary.
